Beach Haus brewery set to transform iconic bakery site in Belmar

Despite its Jersey Shore roots, the East Coast Beer Co. has spent the last four years brewing its products more than 300 miles from any boardwalk, beach or ocean.
But that's set to change later this year. By late this summer, the maker of Beach Haus beer hopes to open its first permanent home in downtown Belmar, taking the former site of the iconic Freedman's Bakery to build its new microbrewery and headquarters.
The transformation of the landmark building leapt forward last month when MB1 Capital Partners, a Wall-based development firm, closed on the Main Street property. The company now plans to redevelop the site into a 36,000-square-foot retail center anchored by the East Coast Beer facility, which it hopes will be a new tourist attraction.

BELMAR, NJ - A real estate investment partnership has purchased the old Freedman's Bakery building here and plans to convert it into a microbrewery for Beach Haus beer with a tasting room, shops and sightseeing tours.
Joel Brudner of MB1 Capital Partners tells GlobeSt.com that he, his investment partner, and John Merklin – one of the founders of the East Coast Beer Co. - all grew up "down the shore." The beer company, which produces Beach Haus beer, has up to now done its craft brewing in leased facilities in Rochester, NY, though.
A microbrewing facility will be a first for the Jersey Shore.

BELMAR — After more than 60 years in business, Freedman's Bakery on Main Street in the borough will close its doors for the last time today.
Freedman's Bakery opened in June 1950, according to Herb Freedman, owner and founder of Freedman's Bakery, and has served the local community ever since. At one time, there were numerous Freedman's Bakery retail outlets in Monmouth County that sold the company's baked goods, which were all made in Belmar.
"I'm very sad and on the other hand a little happy," Mr. Freedman said, noting he is 83 years old and ready to retire.
Iconic Belmar bakery could soon become craft brewery with a Jersey Shore theme

BELMAR – For more than a half century, Freedman's Bakery has been an institution on the borough's Main Street.
By next year, however, the bakery's operations at its high-profile location could cease and be replaced by a completely different business venture – the new headquarters of the East Coast Beer Co.
Representatives from the Jersey Shore-inspired craft beer company – which currently brews four beers, including the popular pilsner Beach Haus – have announced their plans to convert the roughly 30,000-square-foot Freedman's Bakery building into a brewery capable of handling their growing operations, as well as accommodating tours, tastings and a retail component.
"We're very excited about the opportunity that lies ahead for us potentially in Belmar," said Joel Brudner, a partner with the Wall-based real estate investment company MB1 Partners, which has a financial interest in the beer company. "The beer company is a Jersey Shore themed and founded beer company... and the location here in Belmar is very exciting to us and we think it is a very compatible partner for the commerce and tourism business in Belmar."
